Jocelyn Chisholm Carter, Esq., is sole practitioner and owner of J. Carter & Associates, LLC. Soror Jocelyn’s journey to becoming an entrepreneur began in December 2003 when the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself. She was pregnant with her second child while feeling stressed and unappreciated at her current job. A friend approached her and asked if she would be interested in taking over his law practice, which included his roster of clients and referrals. Jocelyn jumped at the opportunity after thoroughly discussing it with her husband and weighing the pros and cons of taking on such as huge responsibility.

As the owner of J.Carter & Associates, Soror Jocelyn says her biggest challenges were coming to terms with not having the financial stability of a steady income, dealing with difficult clients that can adversely affect your livelihood, and learning new areas of law to help expand her business. She overcame many of these obstacles through prayer, research, and by relying on the great support network of African-American Legal Practitioners and mentors who were available to give good advice and forward business referrals. With a strong foundation in place, she now enjoys the flexibility of being an entrepreneur and cherishes the time spent with her family.

Soror Jocelyn has the following advice for anyone wishing to start their own business, “Pray about it to make sure you are doing the right thing; be focused - have a plan, and be ready to accept the financial challenges.”
