Nu Xi Omega Past & Present

Charter Date: December 6, 1980

Serving Somerset & Middlesex Counties

Active Sorors: 63

The history of Nu Xi Omega chapter is a story of service to an ideal. The concept of a graduate chapter for Sorors who live in Middlesex and Somerset counties was born in the summer of 1979 at an informal social gathering in Plainfield attended by Sorors Carol Patterson Anderson, Pamela Johnson, Debbie Macon, Drucilla Carson Wiggins and Gloria Grey Williams.

With 17 other Sorors who heartily endorsed the idea, the women formed the Middlesex and Somerset Counties Alumnae Interest Group. In June 1980, the group learned from then-Regional Director Nellie Gaylord that all requirements for chapter status had been met.

Nu Xi Omega chapter has 5 active charter members and 3 active past presidents.  The chapter also has a Soror of the Year award in which one Soror is given the title yearly by her chapter Sorors for going above and beyond "the good of the sisterhood and service to all mankind"

Nu Xi Omega has an incentive program that rewards Sorors for participation in community service, attendance at meetings and acts of kindness. The Soror with the most points at the end of the year receives $100.00 towards the next conference. Under Soror Connie Pizarro’s leadership we were challenged to NOT be clueless by collecting CLUES. Immediate Past Basileus Andrea Moten asked us to POP by Polishing Our Pearls. Madame Basileus Rita Butler Holliday has invited us to earn KEYS to the House of Nu Xi Omega by Kindly Encouraging Your Sorors in Service and Sisterhood.

In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America's first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women. Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri.

Through the years, however, Alpha Kappa Alpha's function has become more complex. After incorporation in 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha gradually branched out and became the channel through which selected college-trained women improved the socioeconomic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world.

In a world in which materialism is pervasive, and technology and competition have decreased the need for collaboration and cooperation, it is critical to have an association that cuts across racial, international, physical, and social barriers to help individuals and communities develop and maintain constructive relationships with others. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is that vital organization. Alpha Kappa Alpha is a sisterhood composed of women, such as the members of the Nu Xi Omega chapter, who have consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of self-fulfillment through volunteer service. Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 170,000 women in the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa.
